"The ISA certification is recognized as the international standard of safety, quality, and efficacy for surf coaches and instructors within the surf industry. The ISA has certified over 10,500 coaches and instructors in 75 countries and the program is offered as a development and economic opportunity to the 109 ISA Member Federations and network of over 85 course presenters around the world."
Successful completion of the ISA level 1 instructor course requires the following:
  • 2-day ILS water safety course (Approximate cost $600)
  • 2-day ISA theory course (Approximate cost $300)
  • 20-hours of supervised teaching experience (Free)
  • Completion of 1.5 hour Safesport Canada online course (Free)
  • Criminal record and vulnerable sector check (Free)
  • 16-hour first aid certification (Approximate cost $145)
Once you become certified as an ISA level 1 instructor, you will need to re-take the 2-day ILS water safety and your 16-hour first aid courses every 2 years to maintain your certification. The 2-day ISA theory course does not need to be renewed. 
Approximate initial cost of certification: $1045
Approximate cost to renew your certification every 2 years: $445
*** Instructors that work for Halifax Surf School will have at least 50% of this cost paid for them.
